Come Visit

Cedar Chest is located in the heart of downtown Northampton at 150 Main Street—under that famous green awning. We've made our home on two floors of the historic Thornes Marketplace—a dry goods store built in 1873, re-imagined a century later as a modern mix of independently-minded local businesses.

This charming collection of boutiques, retail shops, and eateries teems with traffic exploring the sights, sounds, and smells of this contemporary indoor bazaar.  A flagship store within Thornes since the late 1970's, Cedar Chest is part of a lively business district that is a local and regional destination for shopping, restaurants, and cultural events.

Getting here couldn't be easier with the intersection of Route 90 and Interstate 91—known as the "Crossroads of Western New England"—close by.

Our Story

A DOWNTOWN FAVORITE FOR ALMOST 40 YEARS...

Originally a small linen shop on Main Street in Northampton, Cedar Chest has been a favorite spot among locals and visitors alike for nearly 40 years.  In the late 1970s, Cedar Chest was revitalized by an original group of forward-thinking retailers who started Thornes Marketplace—repurposing an 1800s dry goods store into a unique collection of indoor shops, eateries, and performance studios. A local favorite and return destination for valley visitors seeking a truly unique shopping experience, Cedar Chest is one of New England's most interesting retail shops.  And although the contents of our Cedar Chest have changed many times over the years, we still call Thornes Marketplace our home.  After four decades, we've blossomed to two floors filled with beautifully merchandised items for home, body, and heart.  Come explore...
